Vol. 423 No. 2

Written Answers. - Revenue Outturns.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

63 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Finance if he will illustrate, by way of a graph, the outturns in revenue in absolute terms in the years 1981 and 1991 for (a) customs and excise duties (b) capital taxes (c) stamp duties (d) corporation tax (e) value-added tax (f) other levies such as agriculture and motor vehicle duties and (g) income tax, including employment, health and other levies.

The graph below sets out the information in the format requested by the Deputy. In view of the wide disparity between the nominal values of the particular categorisations specified in the question, the graph is derived by expressing the absolute values as an index.

Absolute Tax Revenue values in 1991, expressed on base 1981 = 100.

Notes:
1. The graph is based on the current-year values of tax revenues taken into the Exchequer, together with the Health Contributions appropriated to the Health Vote, in 1981 and 1991. The Youth Employment Levy (now Employment and Training Levy) was not introduced until 1982, so that yield under this tax head is incorporated only in the 1991 income tax data (category G). The Income Levy was not in operation during either of the years in question.
2. The nominal values of these revenues during 1981 and 1991 were as follows:
