Vol. 423 No. 4

Written Answers. - Skin Cancer Study.

Bernard Allen

Question:

144 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on reports (details supplied) that cancer levels in Connemara are up to twelve times higher than in other parts of the world.

I am aware of initial press reports regarding the study of skin cancer to which the Deputy refers but as the findings have not yet been published it is not possible for me to comment in detail at this stage.

The National Cancer Registry Board, which at present covers counties Cork and Kerry only, is in the process of drawing up plans to extend its area of coverage to the entire country and this will eventually allow detailed information to be assembled on the incidence and prevalence of the various types of cancer including skin cancer.
