Vol. 423 No. 4

Written Answers. - Parking at School Entrances.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

160 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the regulations, if any, he intends to introduce in relation to the parking of motor vehicles outside primary and secondary schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I made regulations last July prescribing a new traffic sign system which, when used, will apply a complete ban on the stopping or parking of vehicles at school entrances. The Regulations are entitled Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations, 1992, and copies have been laid before each House of the Oireachtas.

To give effect to the new signs, by-laws or temporary rules must be made by the Garda Commissioner, with my consent, under section 90 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961. The identification of locations for the signs is a matter for local authorities, acting with the consent of, or at the direction of, the Garda Commissioner.
