Vol. 423 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Cork Road Projects.

Peter Barry

Question:

163 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if the South Ring Road and the Mulcon Valley route in Cork; which is costing £20.5 million and which will qualify for a 75 per cent grant from the Regional Fund, will receive the required 25 per cent support from his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total estimated cost of Stage 1 of the Southern Ring Road, that is from Rochestown Road to the N71 at Bishopstown, and of the Mulcon Valley Project is £41.5 million, of which £22.6 million is scheduled to be spent under the present operational programme. A section of the Southern Ring Road, from Rochestown Road to the Kinsale Road, was opened earlier this year and work is in progress on a further section and on the Mulcon Valley Project.

The full cost of road projects such as these is provided initially by road grants from my Department's Vote. I intend that sufficient grants will be provided to enable both projects to be completed on schedule during 1994. EC assistance is remitted to the Exchequer in partial recoupment of the road grants.
