Vol. 423 No. 6

Written Answers. - Public Representatives' Inquiries.

Michael Bell

Question:

32 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Members of Dáil Éireann are precluded from making direct queries to his Department; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that all queries must be directed through his private office; if he will withdraw this decision which deprives the Members of Dáil Éireann of their democratic and constitutional right; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in my reply to Deputy Ryan on 24 March 1992 — Official Report, Volume 417, column 1106 — it has been the policy of successive Ministers for Justice that inquiries from public representatives to the Department should be directed to the Minister's Office. I am satisfied that this arrangement is appropriate and is conducive to an efficient and co-ordinated response being provided to such inquiries.
