Vol. 423 No. 6

Written Answers. - College Governing Bodies.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

74 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if he has appointed the President of the Students' Union of University College, Galway, to the governing body of the College; and if he will change the procedures for the appointment of student members of the governing body so that in future years the appointment of the student president will be automatic.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

75 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if he has yet appointed to the governing bodies of University Colleges, Dublin, Galway and Cork and St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, the presidents of the students union of those universities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 74 and 75 together.

The Government has nominated the respective Presidents of the Students' Unions to the Governing Bodies of University Colleges, Dublin, Cork and Galway.

In the case of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, there is no provision in the Charter for Government nominees, so it is not possible for the Government, under existing arrangements to appoint a student representative in that case.

The Green Paper on Education signals the need for changes in the composition of the Governing Bodies. These changes will be introduced following completion of the necessary consultation. The question of student representation on Governing Bodies will be addressed as part of this process.
