Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Genetic Counselling Service.

Bernard Allen

Question:

143 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on a recent study carried out by a Dublin consultant neurologist as reported in the Irish Medical Times dated 2 October 1992, that about a quarter of patients suffering from Huntington's disease attempt suicide; and if he will set up a counselling service for those patients in order to reduce this risk.

The Deputy can be pleased to learn that I have allocated special funds this year for the establishment of a new genetic counselling service which is to be based at Our Lady's Hospital, Crumlin. The post of Consultant Medical Geneticist has been advertised and it is expected that the post will be filled before the end of the year.
