Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Clare Hospital Services.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

151 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to provide 100 beds in a hospital (details supplied) in County Clare; and if his attention has been drawn to the lack of hospital facilities in County Clare.

The responsibility for providing hospital services in County Clare is a matter for the Mid-Western Health Board in the first instance.

A development plan for the acute hospital service in the Mid-Western Health Board region was adopted by the board in March 1988 and forms the basis for the board's policy on the service provided in County Clare.

The permanent bed complement in the hospital concerned is 94, made up as follows:—

Medical

52

Surgical

26

Geriatric Unit

10

Day Beds

6

94

The Geriatric Unit came into operation in June, 1992.
I wish to assure the Deputy that the hospital in question will continue to provide an integral and important part of the general hospital service in the Mid-Western Health Board area.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

152 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Health if he will instruct the mid-Western Health Board to reopen the female medical ward in a hospital (details supplied) in County Clare; and if he will direct that the temporary whole-time nurses who were recently laid off from the hospital staff be re-employed.

As part of its normal seasonal bed closures, the Mid-Western Health Board reduced the bed numbers in the hospital to 68 in-patient and six day beds. This is a temporary measure and the situation is being reviewed by the health board in relation to the reopening of the closed beds at the earliest possible date.

In relation to the employment of nursing staff, I understand that agreement was reached yesterday between the health board and the unions concerned on the establishment of a joint review group to consider the nursing requirements of the hospital in relation to the resources available to the board.
