Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dangerous Substance Leakage.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

228 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Labour if he has received a report from the Health and Safety Authority on the dangers to which workers in a company (details supplied) were exposed to as a result of the leakage of hydrochloric acid; the action if any, he proposes to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The National Authority for Occupational Safety and Health has responsibility for the enforcement of the provisions of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989. I understand that an inspector of the Authority is investigating the circumstances of the incident which took place at the premises of the named company in as far as worker safety is concerned. The inspector will be submitting his report to the Authority. Under the legislation, it is the function of the Authority to decide what further action may be necessary in accordance with its enforcement responsibilities.
