Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Part-time Fire Officers.

Michael Creed

Question:

43 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment the number of part-time fire officers who are employed by local authorities; and the proportion of his Department's current allocation to local authorities for fire and emergency services which the remuneration of such officers constitute.

According to returns supplied to my Department, the total number of part-time fire service personnel retained by the local authorities at 31 December 1991 was 1,927. Local authorities do not receive a specific grant allocation to cover the operating costs of the fire and emergency service. Such costs are financed from local authorities' own resources, supplemented by the Rate Support Grant.
