Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Traffic Management Measures.

Austin Currie

Question:

45 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment the circumstances in which he promised to provide £150,000 for the construction of roundabouts etc. at Neilstown, Clondalkin, Dublin 22; when this money was provided to Dublin County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Last September, officials of Dublin County Council advised my Department that, in the course of discussions between local residents, the Garda and the local authority, agreement had been reached on a package of traffic management measures which might be implemented on the Neilstown Road. The works involve the provision of 4 roundabouts together with traffic islands and safety barriers. They are intended to reduce the speed potential of the road, which was one of the key suggestions which representatives of the residents of the area had brought to the notice of the inter-Departmental group dealing with certain problems in the Ronanstown area.

I decided to provide up to £150,000 in special road grants to meet the cost of implementing the works and the local authority was so informed on 8 September. The grants will be provided from funds which had already been set aside to implement any roads related measures that might be recommended by the Inter-Departmental group and they will be paid to the local authority as the works progress.
