Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Proposed Liffey Tunnel.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

54 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the proposed Liffey Tunnel, which will require £70 million of EC structural funding if it is to be built; the procedures which Dublin City Council must follow, in conjunction with his Department, in order to apply for and obtain the necessary consent for this funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ivan Yates

Question:

175 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment his views on the Liffey Tunnel project; whether he is committed to seeking EC funding for this project; whether he will give approval in principle for the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

177 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment his views on the proposal to construct a tunnel under part of urban Dublin.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 54, 175 and 177 together.

This proposal is one of a number of port access options being evaluated by the Dublin Transportation Initiative as part of the development of an integrated transportation strategy for the Greater Dublin area. An interim report of this strategy will be finalised by early November and I await its recommendations with interest. Pending that report, it would obviously be inappropriate to comment on any of the options.
