Vol. 424 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Board Funding.

Michael Ferris

Question:

123 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Health if health boards have made submissions for additional funding to cover the expected shortfall in 1992; the level of shortfall in each health board area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department is in regular contact with each health board regarding its expenditure. Health boards are anticipating that additional resources will be made available to cover a number of items including expenditure in excess of allocation on demand-led schemes, expenditure incurred on the HIB vaccination campaign, and additional costs arising on medical indemnity insurance. My officials are currently in discussion with the boards in order to agree the adjustments to be made in the allocations in respect of approved expenditure, which will be the subject of a supplementary estimate.

While it is difficult for me to be precise concerning the likely year-end expenditure position following the adjustment of the board's allocations, I have made it absolutely clear in my discussions with health boards that they are required to maintain expenditure within the approved allocation.
