Vol. 424 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Gaeltacht Employment.

Enda Kenny

Question:

2 Mr. Kenny asked the Taoiseach the number employed in the Mayo Gaeltacht for each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The most recent source of information on employment in the Mayo Gaeltacht is the 1986 Census of Population. This showed that there were 2,950 persons enumerated in the Mayo Gaeltacht who were in employment at the time of the census.

Is the Minister of State at the Department of the Gaeltacht aware that, for instance, in the Achill Gaeltacht in County Mayo, in the seventies seven factories fully employed people there and that these are now closed? Is the Minister satisfied that Údarás na Gaeltachta, the agency for creating jobs in the Gaeltacht, are being given the necessary resources by the Government to do the job for which they have set up?

The question tabled by the Deputy is essentially statistical and matters of policy ought not therefore arise at this stage.

Arising from the statistics the Minister has given——

Is this on the statistics?

Yes. Will the Minister give me any information as to projections for employment in 1993 for this Gaeltacht?

The Deputy is entering into the area of policy again.

It is statistical.

I cannot give definite statistics on that, but the 1991 census figures will be available by mid-1993 and we can get the information from them.
