Vol. 424 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Equipment Funding.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

32 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the level of grant made available for the purchase of new equipment for the following hospitals (a) Tralee General Hospital, County Kerry (b) Castlebar Hospital, County Mayo and (c) Sligo General Hospital, County Sligo in 1992; and if he has satisfied himself that Tralee hospital is adequately funded.

Capital funding of £1.6 million has been made available in 1992 for equipping the new development at Sligo General Hospital.

The ongoing equipment requirements of health board hospitals are a matter to be accommodated within the non-capital allocations of the boards and the precise expenditure in 1992 under this heading for the general hospitals at Tralee and Castlebar will not be available until the end of the year. In addition, a special capital grant of £35,000 was made available this year by my Department for the purchase of urgent medical equipment for Tralee General Hospital.

The provision of services and equipment at Tralee General Hospital is a matter for the Southern Health Board and I am satisfied that the board determines the funding of the hospital on a fair and reasonable basis.
