Vol. 424 No. 1

Written Answers. - Availability of Condoms.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

47 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the decision of a number of major supermarket chains not to stock condoms and similar positions adopted by a number of smaller shops, he will consider amending the Health (Family Planning) (Amendment) Act, 1992, to allow for the sale of condoms through vending machines; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Health (Family Planning) (Amendment) Act, 1992, liberalised significantly the availability of condoms and I do not see a need to extend the range of outlets further. Following reports in the media which suggested that certain of the new approved outlets had taken decision not to sell condoms, I contacted the major supermarkets and other relevant retail organisations to establish their positions on the matter. On the basis of those contacts, I have been informed that no such decision has been taken.

I have today signed regulations under the 1992 Act which will allow the new outlets approved therein to advertise and display condoms.
