Vol. 424 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bandon (Cork) District Hospital.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

54 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health if plans to develop Bandon District Hospital have been finalised and when he expects progress to be made on the proposal.

Primary responsibility for the development of Bandon Hospital lies with the Southern Health Board. The hospital has 23 beds and is currently functioning as a long stay unit for elderly patients.

The board's priority developments for the elderly comprise extending respite facilities for families caring for dependent elderly at home and ensuring an adequate number of extended care beds for the elderly. Bandon Hospital has one respite bed and the board hopes to extend this service further.

The Southern Health Board also intends to develop a psychiatric day hospital and a low support hostel in the grounds of Bandon District Hospital to service the needs of the local population, a development which is in line with the recommendations of the report on psychiatric services, Planning for the Future.
