Vol. 424 No. 1

Written Answers. - Submarine Electricity Cable Funding.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

87 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance the position in relation to the application for EC structural funding for the proposed submarine electricity cable to Cape Clear Island, County Cork.

In March 1992, the European Commission invited submissions under the European Community programme PERIFRA in respect of 1992. The purpose of the programme is to counteract the negative economic impacts in the EC of developments in Central and Eastern Europe, new trade concessions to certain East European countries and demilitarisation. The funds under this programme are limited to projects approved in 1992. The application by the ESB for the supply of a mainline elecricity link to Cape Clear Island was amongst the projects submitted for funding to the Commission in June 1992. I regret that the decision of the Commission, made on 7 July 1992, did not include funding for this project.
