Vol. 424 No. 2

Written Answers. - Redundancy Payment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

176 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Labour the amount of redundancy payable to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare, who was employed by the same firm for 17 years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person concerned was paid a lump sum of £1,058.22 on 28 April 1992 arising from her dismissal on redundancy from her employment on 2 April 1992. The lump sum was paid from the social insurance fund as the employer in question had been put into receivership and was unable to pay. According to the information submitted to my Department in connection with the claim, the amount paid represented the correct statutory entitlement under the Redundancy Payments Acts.

The amount of the statutory lump sum payment which a qualified redundant employee is entitled to receive is calculated as follows:

(a) a half week's pay for each year of employment continuous and reckonable between the ages of 16 and 41 years;

(b) a week's pay for each year of employment continuous and reckonable over the age of 41 years;

(c) in addition, the equivalent of one week's normal pay.

At present, there is a ceiling of £250 on the gross weekly wages which may be taken into consideration when calculating the amount of statutory redundancy lump sum.
