Vol. 424 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

John Browne

Question:

16 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education the number of schools in County Carlow which have remedial teachers at primary level; and the number of remedial teachers in County Carlow.

There are 12 remedial teachers operating at primary level in County Carlow and they provide a service to 21 primary schools in the county.

(Carlow-Kilkenny): In view of the fact that we have 43 schools and that one remedial teacher can cover a few schools—I accept that half a loaf is better than no bread—would he not accept that if we are serious about equality for all children those in the rural schools deserve fair play? My guess is that most of those schools are in the towns of Carlow, Tullow and Muine Bheag. Has the Minister any policy to ensure that rural schools get a fair crack of the whip when it comes to remedial teaching?

That is a real problem when schools are scattered because it is not easy to get a remedial teacher to visit them. Out of 43 schools in County Carlow, 21 have remedial teachers who cover 75 per cent of the pupils. I will make every effort to meet the Deputy's demands as soon as I can.

(Carlow-Kilkenny): In view of the fact that some schools in rural areas are seeking a shared remedial teacher perhaps the Minister would consider that request carefully when allocating remedial teachers this year?

I will take note of that.

Question No. 17.
