Vol. 424 No. 2

Written Answers. - Charter for Private Education.

Bernard Allen

Question:

41 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if he proposes to introduce a charter for private education which will encompass rules and regulations regarding standards and the approval of awards and which will control and regulate the activities of private colleges in order to control the advertising of claims regarding recognition and placement success thus protecting both the public and the well run colleges in the system.

As the Deputy will be aware, I have set out quite clearly in the Green Paper on Education my intention to agree a comprehensive code of quality control, for the private colleges sector, with the proposed Council for Educational and Vocational Awards.

My basic objective is to ensure the quality of educational services provided in the interests of students and the educational system as a whole.

I would see the code covering the various issues raised by the Deputy.

The Deputy will also be aware that quality control guidelines are already in place through the National Council for Educational Awards in relation to the designation of private, commercial third-level colleges.
