Vol. 424 No. 2

Written Answers. - Disabled or Physically Challenged Athletes.

Seán Ryan

Question:

43 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the support, both financial and other, given by his Department to disabled or physically challenged athletes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under my Department's grants schemes funding is given to the Irish Wheelchair Association, Special Olympics Ireland, Cerebral Palsy Ireland, Irish Deaf Sports Association, Irish Blindsports, Irish Disabled Fly-fishing Association and the Irish Kidney Association.

The funding assists with the costs arising from Coaching, Equipment, Administration, Special Projects, International competition, training of individual sportspersons, the employment of fulltime Administrators and Development Officers and participation in the Paralympic Games. Grants totalling £157,330 were allocated to these organisations in 1991. So far in 1992 grants totalling £158,400 have been paid.
