Vol. 424 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dyslexic Support Group Funding.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

79 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Education when he will provide grant-aid to the Clare Dyslexic Support Group; if his attention has been drawn to the very difficult circumstances under which this group is operating; and if he is prepared to provide special attention and support to dyslexic sufferers.

I am aware of the valuable work being carried out by the group mentioned by the Deputy and indeed by the many other voluntary organisations who support children with disabilities and learning difficulties.

The educational needs of children with specific learning disability, sometimes referred to as dyslexia, are generally met within the ordinary school system, employing a variety of approaches to suite individual needs, with the help, where appropriate, of remedial teachers. Funds are not available to my Department towards the expenses of voluntary groups who may be providing assistance additional to that provided by the school.

The needs of children whose disability is more acute are met by three special schools, two in Dublin and one in Cork.
