Seán Ryan

Question:

87 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, he has to extend the pilot psychological services at primary school level to meet the real demand that exists for such services; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

136 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the degree to which psychological assessment in primary schools is available at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 87 and 136 together.

At present certain psychological services for primary schools are provided through the appropriate Health Boards.

A three year pilot project for the establishment of a general psychological service to primary schools commenced on 1st September, 1990. It is operating in two areas, one urban, West Tallaght/ Clondalkin and one mainly rural, South Tipperary. An independent evaluator has been appointed to assess the project.

The question of the further extension of the service must await consideration of the final report of the evaluator.
