Vol. 424 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fish Licences.

Michael Finucane

Question:

116 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine the locations in the Shannon Estuary that are available for the issue of oyster and eel licences; and the process involved in getting such a licence.

In the case of a person wishing to fish for oysters in the public wild oyster fisheries in the Shannon Estuary, a licence is required under the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959. Such applications are a matter for the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

In the case of oyster farming, all aquaculture activities are licensed by the Minister for the Marine under the Foreshore and Fisheries Acts. Prospective oyster farmers should contact my Department and BIM in the first instance, for technical advice on the suitability for oyster cultivation of particular locations in the Estuary.
Under the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act, 1959 a person wishing to fish for eels in tidal waters should apply, giving full details of the proposed location in which it is intended to fish, for a licence to the local Regional Fisheries Board, in this case the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.
