Vol. 424 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport System.

Ivan Yates

Question:

134 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education if a review will be carried out in relation to the school transport arrangements for a post-primary school (details supplied) in County Wexford in view of the arrangements whereby some children are collected extremely early in the morning and are returned home very late in the evening.

In the organisation of school transport services, Bus Éireann plan routes in such a way as to ensure that, as far as possible, every eligible pupil has a reasonable standard of service from the point of view of time-table, while, at the same time, ensuring that school transport vehicles are fully utilised in the most efficient manner. In order to do this, individual vehicles are generally required to operate a number of services to schools and, consequently, the necessary time-table often requires some pupils to make a relatively early start in the mornings or to wait for some time in the evenings. Every effort is made to ensure that pupils collected first in the morning are returned home on the first trip in the afternoon.

Such an arrangement applies in this case.
