Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - Extension of Voting Rights.

Seán Barrett

Question:

166 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to extend the right to vote in Dáil Éireann elections, which at present exists for British citizens, to citizens of other EC member states and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Electoral (Amendment) Act, 1985, enables the vote at Dáil elections to be extended, on a a reciprocal basis, to nationals of EC members states resident here. The right to vote at Dáil elections has been extended to British citizens. Citizens of Ireland resident in EC member states, other than the UK, are not entitled to vote at parliamentary elections in their country of residence. Accordingly, circumstances in which voting rights at Dáil elections could be extended, on a reciprocal basis, to nationals of those other EC member states do not exist at present.
