Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bog Development Schemes.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

58 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Energy the present position regarding bog development schemes; and if he will discuss the continuance of this scheme with Bord na Móna.

The Private Bog Development Scheme, introduced under the Turf Development Act 1981, was terminated in 1987. The purpose of the scheme was to stimulate the development of private peat resources and the success of the scheme can be measured by the fact that turf production from this source has increased by 50 per cent to 1.5 million tonnes per annum over the equivalent figure for 1981. I have no plans to reintroduce the scheme but provision has been made in my Department's Vote, up to and including this year, to meet outstanding commitments.
