Vol. 424 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Kerry Pier Remedial Works.

Dick Spring

Question:

67 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make an allocation to Kerry County Council to allow the Council to undertake remedial work to alleviate flooding at the Cashen Pier, Ballyduff, County Kerry.

Grant assistance for coast protection works is allocated by my Department for approved projects submitted by local authorities.

Primary responsibility for coast protection rests with maritime local authorities, some of which have undertaken protection work themselves. Of course, owners of private property, have the major role in protecting their own property. The policy of my Department is to facilitate the implementation of permanent schemes, where warranted, to prevent progressive erosion by the sea. To this end, and with a view to drawing up a national programme of coast protection works for the coming years, my Department last year requested each maritime local authority to submit priorities for coast production schemes.
It is expected that Kerry County Council will submit their proposals for coast protection works in the near future.
