Vol. 424 No. 6

Written Answers. - Live Exports.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

109 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will ban live exports to Libya and Egypt because it is both uneconomic for this country and appallingly cruel to the animals involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I do not propose to impose a ban on the export of live animals. This country has a long tradition in live exports even though the balance of exports has shifted significantly from cattle to beef. The continuation of some live trade encourages competition for cattle supplies and benefits producers.

Under current arrangements, all livestock for export from this country are, at the time of loading, subject to inspection by my Department's Veterinary Inspectors. My Department must also be fully satisfied as to the suitability of the carrying vessels, the arrangements for the care and welfare of the animals while in transit, including the adequacy of feed and water stocks for the duration of the journey. In addition, Department Inspectors from time to time travel with consignments in order to monitor conditions on board and to ensure that the animals arrive at their destination in good condition.
