Vol. 424 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Dublin Detention Centre.

Tony Gregory

Question:

135 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1, who was sentenced to two years detention at Oberstown, County Dublin, on 22 October 1992, is now back on the streets.

Oberstown Boys Centre is certified under the Children Act, 1908, to hold up to ten boys on remand and a further 20 boys on long term detention.

On the date in question, the Centre had seven boys on remand and 20 boys on long term detention. In these circumstances, the person mentioned by the Deputy could not be accommodated in the Centre other than by means of an amended placement order from the Court. The person has not yet been referred to the Centre or to any other Centre for young offenders on the basis of such an amended order.
