Vol. 424 No. 8

Written Answers. - Visiting Teachers.

Bernard Allen

Question:

143 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education the situation regarding visiting teachers for travellers in the Cork city and county area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The role of the visiting teachers for travellers includes the identification of the special educational needs of traveller children and assisting in the delivery of services to meet those needs.

At present there are nine visiting teachers for travellers, one of whom is devoted full-time to meeting the needs of the Cork city area and its environs. The work of individual visiting teachers in their area is supplemented by the support of the national education officer for traveller children.

In addition to the visiting teacher service, traveller children in the Cork city and county areas have access to four pre-schools to which the Department provides grant-aid, and nine special classes to which special teachers have been allocated to meet the particular needs of traveller children.
