Vol. 424 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dangerous Substances Transportation.

Bernard Allen

Question:

195 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if there is an emergency plan to cover accidents involving toxic chemicals/material being transported by road through Cork city.

Cork Corporation have an emergency plan for dealing with major disasters generally. It is based on a framework plan approved by the Government in 1984 and is generic in character, thus enabling it to be applied to all types of major emergencies, including one arising from the transportation of materials by road through the city. However, it is also necessary for the other main response agencies, the Garda and the health board, to have their own major emergency plans setting out their arrangements for responding to major emergencies.

I am not, of course, responsible for the implementation of the legislation relating to the conveyance of dangerous substances. Accordingly, any special arrangements for dealing specifically with such matters would be outside the ambit of my Department's responsibilities.
