Vol. 424 No. 8

Written Answers. - Kilkenny/Waterford Road Works.

Phil Hogan

Question:

199 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the need for finance for road realignment in the environs of Waterford city following the completion of the Port development at Bellevue, County Kilkenny; if he will grant finance for those important developments in 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Road improvements at Terminus Street/Sallypark have been raised with my Department by Waterford Corporation in the context of the new port development at Bellevue and a feasibility study, prepared by consultants appointed by the corporation, has been received. The corporation are currently seeking the advice of a further consultant with regard to complementary traffic management measures that will be needed at both ends of Rice Bridge. When this report is received, the overall project will be considered for road grant financing.

The corporation have also raised the question of constructing a high level bridge, which was the subject of a bridge order application in the seventies and associated roads. It is not evident, however, that a further bridge will be required to cater for national route traffic in Waterford city in the short to medium term. Neither is it accepted that any national route by-pass that might be required in the longer term would necessarily use the alignment of the high level bridge proposal submitted in the seventies. The Corporation have been so informed.

Phil Hogan

Question:

200 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide the necessary finance to carry out soil/site investigation for road design works at Grannagh, County Kilkenny; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Outline proposals for the realignment of the Grannagh-Waterford section of national primary road N9 have been received and are the subject of discussion at engineering level with the local authority. Consideration will be given, in determining the 1993 road grant allocations, to providing a grant to enable soil/site investigations to be carried out on this section of road.
