Written Answers. - Arrest of Foreign Registered Vessels.

Question:

35 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Marine the name of every foreign-registered fishing vessel arrested by our fishery protection corps during 1992; the ports they were brought to; and the fine imposed in each case.

Fifty-seven foreign registered vessels were arrested in Irish Waters by Irish fishery protection vessels since the beginning of 1992. The countries of registration of the vessels in question were as follows; Spain 39, United Kingdom 12, Belgium two, France one, Holland one, Portugal one and Germany one. Of these 31 were escorted to Castletownbere, five to Cobh, nine to Galway, four to Dún Laoghaire, three to Rathmullen, two to Cork and one each to Clogherhead, Dublin Port and Skerries.

I have had a schedule prepared outlining the specific information requested by the Deputy and I have arranged to have it circulated in the Official Report.

Of those arrested, one vessel was released without charge and four were issued with warning letters. Fifteen convictions for fishery offences were secured yielding fines totalling £260,641. However I would stress that the bulk of cases have not yet been heard by the courts and therefore remain sub judice.
