Vol. 424 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tax Evasion.

Peter Barry

Question:

82 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Finance the amount of revenue received by the Exchequer as a result of the campaign against evaders in the last year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the measures implemented by the Minister to counteract the various forms of tax evasion, default, non-compliance and smuggling produced an overall identifiable yield to the Exchequer of just under £300 million in 1991, the latest year for which figures are available. Seizures of illegally imported drugs valued at £10.3 million were also carried out in that year. In addition to the direct yield of £300 million, the various compliance and enforcement programmes implemented by the Revenue Commissioners have an important role in protecting the overall yield to the Exchequer. The total net receipt of taxes collected by Revenue in 1991 was almost £8,003 million.

Details of the various anti-evasion measures are contained in Chapter 2 of the Annual Report of the Revenue Commissioners for 1991, copies of which are in the library.
