Vol. 424 No. 9

Written Answers. - Imports from New Zealand.

Ivan Yates

Question:

140 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the Government's position in relation to the level of EC imports of butter and lamb products from New Zealand.

The position is that arrangements for the import into the EC of sheepmeat and butter are governed by the terms of Voluntary Restraint Agreements, VRAs, concluded by the Community with New Zealand. The VRAs were last reviewed in 1989 and will terminate at the end of 1992. The arrangements to apply to imports of butter and lamb products from New Zealand after 1992 are a matter for negotiation but proposals have not as yet been presented by the EC Commission to the Council of Ministers.
