Vol. 424 No. 9

Written Answers. - Non-Immigrant Visitor Visas.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

9 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will hold discussions with the US authorities on their change of policy leading to their refusal to grant non-immigrant visas, to visit the United States, to many genuine applicants; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

John Connor

Question:

38 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the fact that many citizens of this country have, in recent months, experienced refusal or major difficulty in securing non-immigrant visitor visas to visit the United States; and if he has sought, or had discussions, with the US authorities to get clarification on the reasons for such a restrictive visitor visa policy in relation to applicants who are citizens of this State.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

88 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to any difficulties or restrictions faced by Irish applicants for US holiday visas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would propose to take Priority Question No. 9 and Questions Nos. 38 and 88 together.

Decisions in relation to granting entry visas to the United States are of course a matter for the US authorities. However, there are regular contacts between the Department of Foreign Affairs and the US Embassy and any complaints that are brought to our attention are discussed with the Embassy. We will continue to monitor the overall situation and, if further discussions with the US authorities seem likely to be helpful, we will certainly be ready to engage in them.
