Vol. 424 No. 9

Written Answers. - British Army Security Installation.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

32 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has made representations to the British authorities regarding the position of a person (details supplied) in County Derry whose home is now surrounded on three sides by a British army checkpoint, as a result of which she and her family are living in fear of their lives and the value of her house has dropped; if he will urge that steps be taken to deal with her plight; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am fully aware of the difficulties caused for the family concerned by the extension of the existing British Army security installation to take in land adjacent to their home. I can confirm that I have conveyed my concerns about the plight of this family to the British authorities, and I have urged them to give sympathetic consideration to possible measures which might alleviate the situation.

The British authorities have indicated that they will move the boundary fence of the security installation up to 100 feet away from the house in question and while this move is helpful, I am conscious, however, that it may not meet all the concerns of the family affected. I would like to assure the Deputy that I will continue to press the British authorities to ensure that everything possible is done to fully address those concerns.
