Vol. 424 No. 9

Written Answers. - GATT Talks.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

48 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has made any submissions through the EC with reference to the GATT talks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My officials and I have had ongoing close contacts, at all levels, with the EC Commission in the context of the Uruguay Round negotiations. Ireland's position in relation to the various subjects being negotiated is well known to the Commission negotiators.

I am happy to say that many of our concerns in such areas as Textiles, Services and Subsidies have been taken into account by the EC and are fully reflected in the shape of emerging agreements between Contracting Parties. In the case of other areas, where the outcome is still somewhat fluid, such as agriculture, Ireland's concerns have been fully voiced at the Council of Ministers and are incorporated in the Council mandate given to the EC negotiators.
