Vol. 424 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Land Transfers.

Michael Finucane

Question:

23 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance the stamp duty waived in the case of land transfers for each of the years 1982 to 1987; the number of land transfers effected; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that records are not kept as to the actual amount of stamp duty waived in the case of various reliefs from duty arising from property transfers which includes transfers of land.

In the time period mentioned in the question there was a special exemption from duty which was granted in respect of the transfer of land to young trained farmers. A total of 5,936 such exemptions were approved in the period July 1982 to December 1986. I propose to circulate in the Official Report a breakdown of this figure over the various years.
In the last year of the exemption's operation the estimated cost was £5 million.
