Vol. 424 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Boyne River Catchment Drainage Scheme.

John Connor

Question:

45 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the widespread concern relating to the future of the Boyle River Catchment drainage scheme, he will give an assurance that adequate finance will be provided to continue work on the scheme in 1993 and that there is a Government commitment to complete the scheme.

As the Estimates for 1993 have not yet been finalised I cannot say what funding will be available for the Boyle catchment drainage scheme in that year.

The scheduled works on the scheme are at present more than 70 per cent complete. The cost of the scheme is currently somewhat over budget. As I advised the House in reply to a similar question on 8 July last, consideration is being given to the action required to ensure that the overall cost estimate is not exceeded and that environmentally-sensitive areas are not interfered with. Until this examination is finished I am not in a position to give any assurance in relation to the completion of the scheduled works of the scheme.
