Question:49 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the numbers the Government expects to be on the live register of unemployment at the end of (1) December 1992 (2) June 1993 and (3) December 1993.

An average of 284,000 is projected for the Live Register in 1992. The Deputy will appreciate that, as the Live Register is subject to considerable fluctuations from one month to the next, it would neither be practical nor productive to attempt a projection for particular dates as far in the future as June and December 1993. Furthermore, any forecast given at this stage could not take account either of the impact of the 1993 budget or of any other actions affecting employment which might emerge over the year ahead. When the Estimates for 1993 are published later this year the associated average Live Register forecast for 1993 will be announced, as is normal.
