Vol. 424 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Written Answers. - Arva (Cavan) Protestant School.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

80 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the fear and plight of the parents and teachers in relation to Arva Protestant School; whether 30 pupils satisfies the requirements for the employment of teachers; the reason the second teacher of this school was transferred to Killeshandra; and if he will give a commitment that no amalgamation will take place with the neighbouring Catholic school.

The staffing for national schools is determined by the enrolment on 30 September of the previous school year. The Arva school had an enrolment of 24 pupils on 30 September 1991 which warranted a staffing of principal teacher only for the 1992-93 school year. Accordingly the assistant teacher was redeployed to another school from September 1992.

There are no plans in my Department to amalgamate the Arva Protestant School with the local Catholic school.
