Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - North Dublin Water Supply.

Ivor Callely

Question:

212 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the concern of the occupants of thousands of homes in the north Dublin city area who do not have adequate water supply and who regularly experience the presence of water lice and other small insects which is of grave concern to householders, especially in the Dublin postal districts three and five; if he will approve phases 2B, 3 and 4 of the north city arterial watermain scheme; and if he will further approve the proposal to replace the sand water filters from the Roundwood Reservoir which are the cause of the presence of water lice and other small insects.

I am aware of the problems of water supply in the north Dublin city area. In this regard, I recently approved the tender proposal submitted by Dublin Corporation for phases 2B, 3 and 4 of the north city arterial watermain scheme which will significantly improve water supply services to this part of the city. I understand that the corporation have completed the contract arrangements for the construction of this scheme which is scheduled to commence shortly.

Contract documents for the resanding of filters at the Vartry Works are currently with my Department. Having regard to the existing level of commitments under the water and sanitary services programme I am not in a position to indicate when a decision on this scheme may be made.
