Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Returnable Glass Bottles.

Bernard Allen

Question:

213 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he proposes to introduce legislation to enable him to oblige manufacturers and suppliers to impose a deposit on returnable glass bottles, in view of the fact that a Department of the Environment survey showed that 69 per cent of those asked would be willing to pay such a deposit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

, Wexford): A major study in relation to recycling, commissioned by the Department of the Environment, has recently been completed. The study examines a range of options for developing collection and recycling schemes and assesses the feasibility of various possible market interventions, including deposit refund schemes. All of the options considered in the study will be evaluated in drawing up a national strategy on recycling. As a first step in this process, I will shortly be seeking the views of industry, local authorities and consumers on the study's findings.
