Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Loughrea (Galway) By-Pass.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

217 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for the Environment the progress if any, made to date on the Loughrea By-Pass, County Galway; the next steps to be taken both by the local authority and his Department; and when the project will commence.

An objective to provide a by-pass of Loughrea was deleted from the development plan for the town some years ago. Variations to the existing plan, which are currently under consideration by Galway County Council, include one which would reinstate a by-pass road as an objective.

Subject to the outcome of the local authority's deliberations on the development plan, it would be open to the authority to submit proposals for a by-pass of the town in the context of the road development programme for the period after 1993. I understand that preliminary route identification and design work for a by-pass has already been undertaken by the local authority.
