Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Kildare Road Grants.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

232 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received an indication from Kildare County Council regarding the amount of finance required for the maintenance of main and county roads on an annual basis for the years 1993 to 1997; the extent to which he will respond to these requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Question:

234 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment whether sufficient funds will be made available to Kildare County Council to enable it to undertake urgent and necessary road improvements to minor roads such as main and county roads; if a realistic increase on allocation in 1992 will be made available to facilitate reasonable progress on the works required; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 232 and 234 together.

Kildare County Council recently submitted a proposal for a ten-year programme of upgrading and improvement of non-national roads.

Responsibility for this work rests with the county council and the cost falls to be met from their own resources, supplemented by the annual discretionary grant. A total of £1,961,000 was paid to the county council in discretionary grant in 1992, an increase of almost 5 per cent on the 1991 figure. The road grants to local authorities for 1993 have not yet been determined.
