251 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment the steps, if any, he will take to comply with a new draft directive aimed at reducing car exhaust emissions by 35 per cent from January 1996.
, Wexford): The EC Commission has recently submitted a proposal to amend Directive 91/441/EEC in order to further reduce exhaust emissions from cars. Consideration of the proposal by the Environment Council is expected to begin shortly.
Ireland has taken a positive position on the negotiation and implementation of EC vehicle emission controls generally. The new draft directive, like its predecessors, would be principally implemented through tight approval controls.
