Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Driving Test.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

272 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment the reason a person (details attached) in Dublin 12 was not allowed to take a full manual driving test but was confined to taking his test in an automatic car in view of the fact that his disability relates to one arm only and he is well capable of driving a manual car; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The tester abandoned this person's first driving test in a car with manual transmission. The person was advised that, in view of a disability which obliged him to change gears with his right hand, he should drive an adapted car with automatic transmission. He completed a successful test in such a car on 27 November, 1992.
